Watermelon ball pool toys

These are the fillable ones: the original 9-inch ball, the 6.5-inch junior and the glow version. Each is a pool toy you fill with water rather than an inflatable beach ball you fill with air — which is what lets it move underwater.

Why a watermelon ball pool toy beats an inflatable beach ball

An inflatable beach ball is a fine thing on a towel and a bad thing in a swimming pool. Air makes it light, the wind pushes it out of the water, and the game ends with someone walking to the far fence. Our watermelon ball is the same vibrant design and the same fruity fun, but it carries water, so it stays in play.

Every ball here inflates in the same two-step way. Water first, through the hose adapter, until the shell is firm. Then air — two or three pumps through the same valve, which is all the inflatable part of the job amounts to. The air pocket is what sets the buoyancy, and it is the difference between a ball that sits on the bottom and one that hovers at chest height.

People buy them for pool parties, for a backyard afternoon, and for a summer vacation where the only outdoor equipment that fits in the car is the stuff that packs flat. A drained ball rolls up small. A bulk pack of inflatable watermelon beach balls has its own charm as party decoration, but it will not survive a keep-away game with four teenagers; this will.

Customers mostly tell us the same thing: they bought one, it got used every day for a week, and then they bought the junior so two games could run at once. That playful energy is the whole reason we keep the watermelon beach balls theme — bright stripes read clearly through moving water, from the shallow end and from a deck chair.

A fun ball for the pool

We grabbed the Watermelon Ball Lit for our Intex above-ground pool, and the underwater game itself is a genuine blast. You fill it with water so it becomes neutrally buoyant and "dribble" it along the bottom of the pool — the kids (and honestly the adults) have had a great time passing and chasing it around. It's a clever twist on a pool toy and a nice change from floats and noodles. The Game…

Buy one, or two, like we did!

The Watermelon Ball is a HUGE hit in our pool this summer. My son and his 17/18 YO friends play with this for hours. Its a serious workout since its like playing with a medicine ball. Its smaller than I expected, but given the weight with the water, it'd be too heavy if any bigger! Also surprised that neither has popped with the boys playing with it. Pretty much everything in the pool is usually…

Ummm, how is this simple thing so much fun? Even for kids who are constantly bored!

I read other reviews and thought, “how fun can that thing really be?” Well it’s awesome! My boys love it and it turns into a full family game of pass/keep away, underwater. It gets dang heavy when fully filled, but we filled it just enough so that it didn’t sink entirely, and also doesn’t just float on the surface. I wish I had bought it at the start of summer instead at the end, when I was…

The rest of the bag

  • Water Skip Balls — Small bouncing balls and discs that skim the top of the water instead of going under it.
  • Pool Footballs — Grippy waterproof footballs built for wet hands, long throws and shallow-end chaos.
  • Multi-Ball Sets — Two or three of our balls packed together, so a pool party never runs out of options.

Not sure which one suits the people who will be using it? The deck notes on how the game works and pool games by age go through it properly.
